She danced out into the open church-yard; but the dead there do not dance; they have far better things to do. She wished to sit down on the poor man`s grave, where the bitter fern grows; but there was no peace nor rest for her. And when she danced toward the open church door, she saw there an angel in long white garments, with wings that reached from his shoulders to his feet; his countenance was serious and stern, and in his hand he held a sword that was broad and gleaming.

* 노르웨이인가 스웨덴인가 하튼 북유럽의 동화인 `분홍신`의 한 장면이다. 어렸을 적 우리집에는 삼성출판사인가에서 나온 `칼라텔레비젼`이라는이름의 동화 전집이 있었고, 거기에는 세계 각국의 동화들이 정말 멋진 일러스트레이션과 함께 실려있었다. 우리 언니와 나, 내동생은 그 동화책을 보면서 그림을 따라 그렸고, 동화를 낭독했다. 그리고 커서는 `우리 이런 환상적인 동화책 만들어보자`고 서로 얘기하곤 했다.

분홍신의 카렌은 예쁜 구두를 탐낸 죄로 평생을 구두를 신은채 춤을 추어야만 하는 벌을 받게 된다. 결국은 도끼로 양 발을 자르고 나서야 그 광기의 춤에서 벗어나게 된다. 물론 내가 읽었던 동화책에는 그런 무서운 표현들은 없었다. 하지만 나는 아직도, 그 동화책 안에 들어있던예쁜 빨간 구두 그림과, 하도 많이 넘겨서 부드러워진, 약간 두꺼운 아이보리색의 책장, 그리고욕심을 부린 댓가로 카렌이 받은 형벌의 그그로테스크한 형태(광기에 가까운 춤!)... 거기에 매혹되었던 나를 기억한다.
